The sign is an advertisement for milk, featuring “Sanchung – king of milk” written in neon. Sanchung is a suburb of Taipei, capital of Taiwan. With roots in Japanese colonial rule, milk in Taiwan grew to become a prestige product and a constant in the local agricultural sector. It became one of the main exports of the country, but it was also slowly introduced in the local diet. Bubble tea or Boba, a Taiwanese creation, became in the 1980s an extremely popular beverage throughout Asia. It was invented by mixing traditional Chinese tea with high-quality Taiwanese milk and sugar. Small tapioca balls were also added to the mix, being nowadays substituted by spherified fruity syrups. With a rapid growth in popularity and many varieties available, Bubble tea is today a well-known beverage all over the world.
