Description

The unique-looking lamp post is located in a parking lot in the town of Kingston, located by the Hudson River, in the state of New York. The town was previously known as Esopus, in reference to the local indigenous people. Later, it was renamed Wiltwijck by Dutch settlers, as part of the colonised area called New Holland, with New Amsterdam as a capital. In 1664 the region was usurped by the English. The name Kingston was officially introduced only after the capital was renamed New York. Later, in 1777, the state of New York got its own constitution, featuring a declaration of independence from the British reign. As the British army raided New York, the state’s new independent administration immediately relocated to Kingston, but was soon also raided and burned to the ground. The town still commemorates the torching of the town with a grandiose theatrical revival of the raid titled, 'The Brits are coming, the Brits are coming… again!'
