The bench is situated in Park Tivoli, the biggest green area of Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. The park was constructed during French rule in 1813. However, it did not acquire its current name until 1835 when — like the amusement park in Copenhagen – it was named after the Tivoli garden in Paris, which in turn was named after the gardens in Tivoli near Rome.
Benches of this type are characteristic of the park’s central axis, but have also become part of the park monument commemorating Edvard Kocbek, the Slovenian poet. He played a crucial role in the struggle against fascism during World War II, but was later persecuted by the communist regime of Yugoslavia. The monument features a bronze version of the bench where the poet sits while contemplating his miniature double on the armrest.
