Southern beech, Andes

Description

The Nothofagus antarctica, also known as the “southern beech”, is native to the Andean regions. The pattern of distribution around the southern Pacific Rim suggests that the dissemination of the genus dates to the time when Antarctica, Australia, and South America were connected: the super-continent referred to as Gondwana. The 13 trees planted in Superkilen were partially funded by a local Danish-Chilean union, along with the Monkey-puzzle trees and the memorial stone commemorating the Military Coup of 1973. They were first planted on the Red Square and then transplanted to the Green Park when the square was refurbished.
