Description
The Cherry Plum Nigra (Prunus cerasifera “Nigra”), also named Pissardii Nigra, is a bushy hardy perennial deciduous tree. The species was developed in America around 1916. Highly decorative and widely planted, its very dark pink flowers are some of the earlier ones to appear — in April in Copenhagen but often in late February or early March elsewhere. Following the blossoms, a beautiful foliage of dark purple leaves retains its colour throughout the summer. Some trees produce small and surprisingly delicious plum-like fruit. This tree was very popular in the 50s.
