Tingbjerg Culture House and Library

Short description
The new cultural center, dubbed 'The Television', brings life to an expansive affordable housing area, which despite its troubled reputation is considered a fine example of good architectural residential planning.
Description

The Copenhagen suburb of Tingbjerg has a modern landmark and long-awaited meeting point in Tingbjerg Kulturhus. Some compare its remarkably narrow shape with a giant television and, in keeping with this, a vivid extroverted glass façade facing the street showcases the activities inside.

Tingbjerg Kulturhus is built as an extension to its site's existing school and during daytime, this has full access to facilities. In addition, it comprises a library as well as a culture centre including a café, workshops, meeting facilities and a multi-purpose hall.

The overall design is inspired by English urban gardens and conceived to correspond with the adjoining open landscape. Both its architecture and its classic yellow brick cladding reference the area's 1950s buildings by the famous urban planner and architect Steen Eiler Rasmussen.

But while it was important to preserve a clear link to the location’s uniqueness, nothing about Tingbjerg Kulturhus is conventional – with outstanding COBE projects such as Nørreport Station and Biblioteket, expectations for this new project were justifiably sky-high.
