Description

The chairs were originally part of a work of art from 1938 by Constantin Brâncuși, the great Romanian sculptor. Brâncuși created the chairs as part of several official monuments for the fallen Romanian soldiers during World War I, that the artist was contracted to construct by the river Jiu, at the foot of the Transylvanian Alps. The chairs are taken from the sculpture ‘The Table of Silence’. The sculpture sees a large circular stone table surrounded by twelve hourglass seats, an arrangement that draws comparisons to the Last Supper and is referred to as the Apostle Table. The table is a representation of where the soldiers would have gathered prior to the war. In the same area you can also visit the 'Endless Column' and walk through 'The Gate of the Kiss' before you quietly take a seat in one of the chairs around the 'Table of Silence'.
