Description

The Skövde bench present in Superkilen was originally produced as a copy. But after the park opened, the project received massive attention in the town of Skövde. The designer Bo Högberg in collaboration with the local government and the cement company Cementa offered to produce and send a new bench to Copenhagen. The result is that the S-shaped bench present in Superkilen travelled from its original place and that the towns of Skövde and Copenhagen now share the same bench.

The bench is called skövdebänk and has the town’s initial — an S — as the main structural element. The town of Skövde is known for its huge factory, where 5000 employees of Volvo produce annually around half a million diesel engines for trucks, buses, construction machinery or motor boats, among others. The town also hosts an official Volvo museum, which traces the company's development since the first registered trademark in 1915. In addition to diesel engines, Skövde is the famous home of the Catholic saint, Saint Helen of Skövde, who is said to have been canonized in 1164 and now adorns the town arms. The saint is known in Denmark as Helenekilden (Spring of Saint Helen) in Tisvilde — the town in northern Zealand where the body of the murdered saint supposedly drifted ashore, causing a spring to suddenly spurt. Today, the town is also known for a growing gaming industry, in connection with the creation of a computer game design program at the University of Skövde over 20 years ago.
