Description

The town of Nijmegen near the German border is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, celebrating its bi-millennium in 2005. For several years the town has been investing intensively in improving cyclist conditions, an effort which has brought about (among other things) a number of new bike highways such as the F325, an 18-kilometer-long super bike lane connecting Nijmegen to the neighboring town of Arnhem. With 35 cycle routes at the moment, there are plenty of options for outdoor enthusiasts: in total 21 bike rides, four mountain biking trails and ten bicycle tours are waiting to be explored. An extra bicycle parking facility for almost 4.000 bicycles was built and opened to the public in 2014. The new indoor facility is open 24 hours per day, seven days of the week. It is free to use and the parked bicycles are guarded. All the individual racks have detectors which makes it possible to indicate the number of free spaces per row, but it also gives the managers the opportunity to monitor how long every bicycle was parked in a rack. This way they can detect possibly abandoned bicycles that can then be removed. In 2016, the Cyclists’ Union of the Netherlands voted Nejmegen the best bike city in the country.
