Description
The cover is the most famous entrance to the legendary Parisian sewage system. The city’s subterranean sewers were first constructed in 1370 and have since been the backdrop of some of the world's literary magnum opuses, such as Victor Hugo’s 'Les Misérables' ('The Miserable') from 1862. Here the protagonist, Jean Valjean, escapes the soldiers hunting him through a well cover and into the sewers, carrying his injured buddy on his shoulders. Nowadays, the Parisian cover is so popular that it can be purchased as a carpet or doormat.
