Description
The drain comes from Basel, the third-largest city in Switzerland. The characteristic wavy pattern was chosen to prevent bike wheels from getting stuck in the drain. But the pattern was also a significant source of inspiration to the local Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for their design of a building on 11 Schützenmattstrasse, also in Basel. The façade of the apartment and office building from 1993 is covered by opening shutters made of cast iron, all characterised by the same wavy shapes. The pattern is now also draining the water off the Superkilen paths.
