The mural portraits Chile’s democratically elected President, Salvador Allende, victim of a gory coup d’état on September 11, 1973. The mural from 2008 commemorates the day of his birth one hundred years earlier in Valparaíso. The coup and the military junta’s subsequent persecution of the opposition are estimated to have cost approximately 3000 lives and disappearances, as well as forcing thousands of Chileans into exile. More than 1000 of them are still living in Denmark today. Before the construction of Superkilen, local Chileans chose this location to erect a memorial commemorating the coup. A cenotaph from Chile was installed on the square in front of Nørrebrohallen, partially funded by local Copenhagen trade unions. Adequately, the square was colloquially known as Salvador Allendes Plads (Salvador Allende’s Square). When the area was refurbished in connection with the construction of Superkilen, the cenotaph was moved in order to stand in front of the new Allende mural from Valparaíso.
