The Royal Red Norway Maple (Acer Platanoides “Royal Red”) is a selected species, not native to North America but to Europe. It is a nice accent shade tree. Its burgundy leaves can provide a colourful touch in the otherwise all-green summer vegetation. It retains an attractive purple foliage throughout the season. The lobed juvenile bright red leaves look quite ornamental. They turn into a surprising glossy purple-red and orange in the fall. In early spring, before leafing, it presents stunning corymbs of shiny dark red that contrast beautifully with the red-flushed lemon yellow flowers along the branches. Deep burgundy samaras fruits enhance its dramatic spring quality. This tree species is highly tolerant to urban pollution and even thrives in inner city environments.
